Ask The Professional - Questions & Answers

Q. Are you a member of the Canadian Kennel Club (C.K.C)?
    A. No, If you are a member of the C.K.C you must follow the by-laws. One of these by-laws are that you must as a member, breed only C.K.C registered dogs or dogs that are eligible to be C.K.C registered. We ( Paws "R" Us kennel), use several registery bodies throughout North America, some of which the C.K.C doesn't accept. This would make us violating there by-laws. This is why we are not members.

Q. Should I give a rawhide chew toy to a puppy?
    A. In our (Paws "R" Us kennel) opinion we don't recommend rawhide chew toys for the following reasons: The puppy could swallow large pieces of the rawhide and these toys lay around and could come into contact with germs like salmonella, it could happen very innocently, like you were preparing a chicken for supper and you stepped on the dogs chew toy and you bend down and picked it up and put it away, then washed your hands and started with supper again. We have found the kong a very good chew toy for puppies.

Q. Which is better male or female?
    A. Sex should not be an issue; it depends on the puppy own personality. Are they bold, adventurous, shy, mischievous; like the human race in ways.

Q. Does the puppy have its shots and when does it need them next?
    A. The puppy receives a vaccination and health check by a licensed veterinarian, prior to leaving the kennel. The puppy should receive another booster 4 to 6 wks after the first and followed with another booster & rabies 4 to 6 wks later, to fully vaccinate your puppy.

Q. When is the best time to spay/neuter my puppy?
    A. In our opinion the best time to spay/neuter your dog is around 6 month of age. If done early enough in males they will never lift their leg. In both sexes it helps reduce the risks of certain diseases & may prolong their life.

Q. When can I take my puppy home?
    A. Between 8 to 12 wks of age the puppy is ready to go to its new home & is ready to form a permanent bond with its new family.

Q. How often should I feed my puppy?
    A. Your puppy should be feed 3 to 4 times daily to insure the puppy gets proper nutrition. Around 4 month of age the feeding can be reduced to twice a day.

Q. What about, housetraining my puppy?
    A. Patience understanding & being consistent is the key. Always praise immediately after a job well done.

Q. What breed is right for me?
    A. First take a look a your life style and ask yourself what you are looking for in a dog. Do you have a quiet or active lifestyle, Is your living area large or small? What size of dog (large, medium, small)? What type of hair, short, long, curly? Do you have time to groom? You should first research any breed to see if it fits into you criteria.

Q. Is cleaning the ears important?
    A. Yes, it reduces the risk of ear infections especially, in droopy eared dogs and water loving breeds. This should be done weekly and starting this at a young age will help the dog become accustom to this procedure.

Q. Should I clip my dog's nails?
    A. Yes, but be careful not to cut the kwik or the nail will bleed. Dogs should have their nails clipped every 4 to 6 weeks to prevent them from self-injury.

Q. Do you have the kind of dog I'm looking for?
    A. "I've been looking everywhere" sound familiar? This is why we offer a variety of breeds to better serve the public.
