Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell Terrier weighs approx. 12-18 pounds, comes in two sizes, and is approx. 9-12 inches or 12-15 inches in height. He comes in two coat types, smooth or wire. His colour is a least 51% white (more prefered) with markings of tricolour, brown or black etc. The Jacks were created by Rev. Jack Russel who was a passionate fox hunter of the mid-1800's and pursued the sport until his death at age 88. Fox hunters needed a smaller dog to roust the fox once he had gone to ground, many hunters would transport these little dogs by horseback till they reached the fox's lair. The Reverend prefered a longer legged jack that could follow the hounds on foot. He started with a crossbred terrier bitch, "Trump" which he brought from the milkman. Russell continued with the breeding program, but no records were kept, but it's beleived crossbreeding occurred. Fighting bull-and-terrier dogs were used to add the white colour, this made the dog easier to identifie from the fox, and this also increased the aggression and tenacity. Sadly, sometimes these dogs would silently kill the fox underground, thus spoiling the hunt. beagles were added to mellow this hard edge, as well as adding the tendency to tongue. The result was a dog, that was often one thought ahead of the fox. The Jack Russell to this day is still capable of going to ground, one lady who owned three JRT's chased a bull raccoon down a drain pipe near her home, when they didn't emerge by the following morning she had a backhoe brought in and started digging, the crew cut a ditch, reaching 300 feet over the next 12hrs and finally discovered the raccoon backed up against the cellar wall. Not only were the terriers none the worse for the ordeal, they were jockeying each other for position to see who could get closest to the prey, this is not uncommon for them to give up comforts, food or water once they have the whiff of the quarry. JRT's are also excellent Ratters, Although the Parson never used his dogs for the purpose. One englishman in 1977 and his team of four JRT's took three tons of rats out of chicken farms in just one day! Despite all these emphasis on it's abilitys and desire to fight and kill pests, JRT's are excellent house dogs and childrens pets. They have a unique sense of humour, are clean in their habits and are sweet and affectionate to people, they require plenty of excersise and if there's two, they may go hunting if not fenced in. The JRT's has its own registery in both Great Britain and the USA, but in neither country is there much desire for formal recognition of the breed. Owners prefer the unrefined nature of their breed and worry that novice breeders may breed them for looks and showpoints and they will loose there working abilities that have been so painstakingly kept over the years. A typical opinion is stated "If these terriers ever become soft-bred show dogs, John Russell will turn over in his grave". The JRT's possession affinity for horses, has made them a popular addition to many horse farms, and estates of the wealthy, especially on the East Coast. The Jacks usually live to 16yrs as a house pet.

The Afghan Hound's country of origin is Afghanistan, he weighs approx. 50-60 pounds and is about 25-27 inches in height. His coat is long straight, thick, silky and short on the face. He comes in several colors and is also known as Tazi. The history of the Afghan Hound is ancient, and legend claims the Afghan as the dog Noah took into the Ark. Northern African sight hounds migrating thru the mountains of Afghanistan, some hounds had longer hair, these were preferred because of the cold climate in the mountains. The dogs with heavy coats were selected for breeding and this eventually became the Afghan Hound. The breed spread into the border areas and even into India, where he aided hunters and shepherds. His unique, upright tail with the curled end served as a marker in the heavier underbrush, and his high-set hip bones enabled him greater flexibility in the mountain ranges. Even with his elegant look he was no push over!! Hunting big, tough game like wolves, foxes and gazelles. In times past he was a favorite of the Afghani nobility as an adjunct to the sport of falconry. His old native name is Tazi, and he resembles Tasy of Russia (even to the ring in the tail) this likelihood indicates similar ancestry because of the proximity of Southern Russia and Afghanistan geographically. Originally, sale of the national dog to outsiders was prohibited and the first specimens didn't arrive in England and the USA until the 20th century. A Captain Bunff imported a hound named "Zardin" from Afghanistan around that time. In 1907 he won the exhibition at the Crystal Palace Show which started a real interest in the breed. Britain started breeding programs by the 1920's and the AKC and CKC gave recognition in the 1930's. The Afghan coat has a distinct shorthaired saddle on the back which forms as an adult, and it's permissible for the dog to display a shorthaired cuff on the feet. Frequent combing is necessary to keep the coat long and beautiful or clipping is required for easier maintenance Even thou he competes in shows today he still participates in lure coursing. His temperament can be aloof, but he can be the greatest of clowns at playtime. from their origin on Mount Sinai to today's showing, the Afghan Hounds are majestic at it's peak. "At a glance, one can see the Eastern inscrutability; the conviction that they are royalty the certainty that they are above lesser breeds".

The American Black and Tan Coonhound's country of origin is the USA. He is approx. 23-27 inches in height and weighs about 60 pounds. His color is black with tan points and he is also know as, Black and Tan Coonhound. Formed scouts and Indian fighters, Simon Kenten and Poe brothers from the Ohio Valley, were among the first to foster the Black and Tan in the late 1700's. From Poe's stock and later efforts of Simion Shirk and his grandson, Holmes Lingo, in the early 1800's, started the Old Glory Strain of Black and Tans, this breeds most famous line lasted more than 130 years. Until the mid-1940's with others such as the merritt brothers of the 19th century and Don Stringer's ten oaks line of the 1920's-1940's, contributed to the modern development of the American Black and Tan breed. The ACH were basically developed from foxhounds with a bit of French, German, and Irish dogs for specific needs. In fact, AKC position early in this century only recognized them as foxhounds and won't register them as coonhounds. This is why breeders turned to the United Kennel Club, which has sponsored coonhounds and their competitive events ever since. The Black and Tan was the first "Coonhound" to come from the American foxhound circle and is the only one accepted by AKC. Black and Tans come from early methodical, exquisitely, cold nose "foxhounds". Most cynologists feel that a large percentage (at least) of the Kerry Beagle is in the lines. The raccoon unknown in Europe but native to Americas. "Coon" hunting became a passion with Americans and specific dogs were bred to ensure the sport would live!!. Raccoons are nocturnal, so hunting is done at night, once a dog encounters a fresh coon trail, each hound has a distinctive bawl which the owner can identify, then all the hounds will begin to bay as well. The hunters follow the musical sound of the hounds which can be heard for many miles as they pursue the quarry. When the dogs tree the raccoon there voice tone changes and the hunters head towards the sound. The American Black and Tan Coonhound is a big, rangy strong headed hound. He has a beautiful bugle voice and leaves no stone unturned. E.S. Traverse, a knowledgeable hounds man, writes about the classic Bk & Tan as a cold-nose that opened on tracks that other hounds didn't know existed. The Bk and Tan has strong determination and because of these traits he has been used to trail boar, big cat, and other similar game besides the raccoon. The UKC registers 12,000 American Black and Tan Coonhounds a year while the 600 registered by AKC go by the shortened name Black and Tan Coonhound. The Black and Tans are calm, affectionate and good with children, they love people and are willing to please. Early socialization is suggested to insure confidence. Typical of most hounds once they catch the scent, they're off and running, so owners are well advised to secure dogs in an enclosure when not being worked or played with.

Bloodhound

The Bloodhound is a heavy-skinned, tracking dog with a melodious voice, and weighs 70-110lbs., He comes in black & tan, red & tan, tawny and small amounts of white on chest, feet and tip of tail are allowed. His country of origin is Belgium, and he is also known as the the St. Hubert hound because his ancestry can be traced straight back to the monastery of St. Hubert and before. The modern bloodhound is familiar around the world even thought he is not identical to the monastery, he is officially named the Chien de St. Hubert in Belgium, after his ancient, extinct ancestors. The bloodhounds nose has been said to be 2 million times great then a human's. He is a silent trailer not announcing his presence. He has a reputation for picking up a cold trail and following it for hours. He is used in law enforcement to find lost persons or trailing criminals. There are many records of amazing feats recounted among the bloodhound owners. One story of a bloodhound named "Nick Carter" tells of a bloodhound following a trail 104 hours old, leading to a fugitive and his arrest. This same dog with his skills resulted in the capture and conviction of more then 600 criminals. He has a reputation as a tracker and is used more frequently to locate lost children and hikers.

Basset Hound

The Basset Hound's country of origin is Great Britain. He usually weighs 40-60 pounds and is approx. 14 inches in height or less. He has a short, smooth coat which usually comes in a tri color. The Basset Hound was bred in the middle ages to hunt in heavy cover, his short crooked legs allowed him to hold his nose close to the ground. Like a Dr. Seuss creation, the Basset has a head and bone structure of a Bloodhound, coloring of a foxhound and legs of a dachshund. Developed by individuals tastes, in England the breed known as the Basset Hound is closely related to the whole family of french bassets, like the Normand and D'Artois type have been noted in England at least since Shakespearean times. A separate individual breed came several centuries later in 1866. The Cante De Tournow sent a pair of Basset Normands, "Basset" and "Belle" to Lord Galway of England. A litter bred from this pair went to Lord Onslow who proceeded to develop an exceptional pack by crossing with more imports from the Coultreux pack of Normandy, Importation ceased soon after and the english version of the Basset developed on it's own. The Basset closely resembles the St. Hubert Hound (Bloodhound) with the same superb nose, considered to be the best next to the bloodhound and cold trailing ability. From England to America, he has been widely accepted. The Basset with his short-structure bulk, proves useful in heavy, impenetrable cover. He can be used to tree coon, squirrels, opossum (AKC sponsors field trials for rabbit trailing) throughout the U.S.A., he is also well represented in the North American show ring. The Basset, beagle and dachshund are only a few of the hounds that have achieved a fair degree of popularity as a companion dog. This may be due to advertisements, like Hush Puupy (TM) shoes, with the Bassets soft, sad, appealing face how could one resist. The Basset, for hunting situations can be a bit lazy or stubborn, according to some hunters. Bassets love to track deer and may cross highways or loose there masters in the woods so, Trailing Deer is discouraged. The Basset usually approaches slower, which is an advantage because he is less likely to frighten game. England and America have similar types like the cousin Artois and Normandy there is a variance between hunting type and show type. The bassets in formal hunting packs in England and ones used in field training or a pet in America resemble the Coultreux strain with the lighter bone, higher, straighter leg and minimum of hanging skin. Dogs bred for show, like these originally bred by Louis Lane for their "aesthetics" are massive, extremely low stationed, more crooked legs and a super-abundance of wrinkles, flew and dewlap. Like most hounds the Basset can be independent in nature and his musical voice, so loved for hunting, may bother the neighbors, so discipline is a must. Bassets still make fine pets. A few in America have proven critics wrong by winning obedience competitions at the highest levels. Some families still use him for hunting rabbits occasionally and being one of the family. Pack existence called for a good humored, sociable dog and this transfers well to life as a companion. Grooming is minimal, and he loves dinner time, but doesn't care for exercise, so routine walks must be scheduled to avoid obesity.

Beagle

The Beagle's country of origin is Great Britain and he weighs approx. 18-30 pounds. He comes in 2 sizes, about 13-16 inches in height. His coat is short and smooth, and he comes in any hound color, usually tri-colored. The history of the Beagle is foggy because in early times, small hounds similar to the Beagle have existed and were used for hunting hares, in the British Isles, particularly Wales. The original form possibly came with the Celts, crossings with Artois hounds as well as others, helped create the modern breed. Throughout the world, dogs are known for there hunting abilities, like the beagle who is best suited for rabbits, hare, squirrel etc, they have a strong determination and a musical voice. During the days of King Henery VIII and his daughter Elizabeth I, Beagles were sometimes wire-haired, they were also so tiny they could be carried to the field in a pocket, or a hunt coat. It has been reported that 10 or 12 couples of Beagles could be carried in saddle baskets! Over the years the size has increased with the occasional "pocket" Beagle popping up in a litter. American's top size is 15 inches, although in England they allow them up to 16 inches. Hounds of the Beagle sort were brought into the states throughout the Colonial period, but type varied until more imports from England arrived in the 1880's and 1890's. The Beagle, with his small size and happy personality and little grooming requirements make him a loved companion and his ability to find a trial and work the rabbits back towards the hunter contribute to his demand. He is a wonderful playmate for children, has a long life span and has remained in the top ten registries for many years in the U.S.A. and reached the number one spot in the 1950's. The Beagle has a strutting performance in obedience that make him a joy to watch. The Beagle may be a bit stubborn and one may have to deal with his hounds voice. The Beagle with his happy-go-lucky nature may cause him to wander off his masters property, to avoid this training, crating and a fenced yard is recommended, while to owner is away. The breed is seen lots in the winner's circle at dog shows, nearly 3,000 sanctioned Beagle field trials are offered every year. Even with all the Beagles present, most Beagles enjoy the hunt individually or in pairs or with their master(s).
