West Highland White Terrier

The West Highland White Terrier weighs approx. 15-20 lbs., 10-11 inches in height and is white in colour. His country of origin is Great Britain. He was used for vermin control, and because of his white colour he was easily distinguished from the terrain. The white terrier has run the scottish highlands for over 300 years, King James I, a stuart who ruled England in the 1620's requested some game "little white earth dogges" out of Argyleshire- possibly Westies. Colonel Malcolm of Polltalloch, Argyleshire Scotland accidentally shot and killed his favorite terrier (a dark coloured one) on a hunt in 1860 and vowed only to have white dogs from then on. The Malcolm's may have been the originator's of the Highland Terrier-as game white terriers stayed in the family since the 18th century or before. During this early time, they were often called Polltalloch Terrier's others in the shire also fostered the breed, like the Duke of Argyll's estate at Dumbartonshire (Scotland) was called Roseneath with the Duke's patronage and interest in this breed, he was generally known as Roseneath Terriers. In the first organized dog show in the 1800's, the westie was also known as the white scottish terrier. Westie's were classified in 1904 with the name West Highland White Terrier. Westies first charmed Westminster spectators in 1906. The westie has a shaggy white coat, small erect ears and a black button nose giving the Highland Terrier a cute and cuddly image. The hard-textured hair causes mud to just fall off when dry. They clean up with a few strokes of the brush, so keeping the coat white is not a major problem. He is hardy, devoted and happy-go-lucky, exhibiting typical terrier tendencies, alarm barks, digging, cock-of-the-walk strutting and one-upmanship with other dogs. Weather is no deterrent to his energetic personality and he makes a fine family pet.

Toy Fox Terrier

The Toy Fox Terrier, also known as Amertoy weight's approx. 3-7lbs., has a short, smooth coat, and comes in mainly tri colors with white predominating. He is approx. 10 inches in height and originated in America. He descends from the smooth fox terrier which arrived in the U.S.A. from England in the 1870's. Both sizes were recognized by the UKC as Fox Terriers until 1936, when the two varieties were divided. the Toy Fox Terrier has all the desirable terrier attributes in a small attractive package. The Toy Fox Terrier finds himself equally at home in an apartment, condo but, still has the instincts of the terrier. These little dogs were on farms for as long as people from rural backgrounds could recall, often appearing in Fox Terrier litters, they were termed runts. The Toy Fox Terrier with this instinct bred in them even if spoiled, pampered all there life, if they see a varmint they will try to kill it. Toy Fox Terrier's have also proven their worth as Handi-Dogs, which are trained to assist the deaf and handicapped. These little dogs can fetch the paper, or shoe. Can pick up a dropped pencil and bark on command to indicate the need for help. With people with limited abilities of their hands or who are confined to a wheelchair, Handi-Dogs give their masters increased independence. The Toy Fox Terrier has erect ears, tail docked, grooming is a breeze and he provides his own exercise. His frisky clowning endears him to his owner.

Pomeranian

The Pomeranian weighs approx. 3-12lbs. and is about 11 inches in height. He has an abundant spitz-type coat, and comes in several colors. His country of origin is Great Britain. The breeds origins come from European herding spitz dogs. When the first dogs were brought to England from the German Province Pomeranian they were larger (up to 30lbs.), usually white and had less coat then our modern poms. Litters of 10 included smaller pups and soon the smallest species were preferred. Queen Victoria fell in love and, brought the Pom home with her where she showed extensively at British Shows. Her Poms weighed around 12-18lbs. which were considered small at the time. This encouraged an upsurge throughout England where they were exhibited at the time as "spitz dogs". Breeders over time bred them smaller and smaller with more coat, specimens in modern shows are usually 4-5lbs.. Even thought the Pom gets it's name from it's Homeland, they are considered to be an English breed, developed in Britain to their modern form. The FCI registers the Pom as the Grammar Zwergspitz, considering it the same breed. The Pom arrived during the turn of the century in North America and quickly gained popularity. The Pom is a beloved companion world wide. Poms are alert, active and have a curious character, and are useful alarm dogs. This little breed is full of himself and love nothing more then to strut their stuff. Weekly grooming will keep his coat neat. They are wonderful playmates for children providing the child is considerate of there size. Their easy care, beauty and diminutive size suite them as companions for the elderly.

American Eskimo

American Eskimo's come in 3 sizes, standard, approx. 14-19 inches in height and weighs about 18-35lbs., Miniature's are about 11-15 inches in height and weight approx. 10-20lbs. and toys are under 12 inches in height and weight approx. 6-10lbs.. They originated in USA, the only spitz breed created and fostered in America. There colour is pure white, white with biscuit or cream permissible. American Eskimo's referred to as "Spitz" probably descends from white german spitz dogs. The American Eskimo was given this name, Eskimo as a tribute to their ancient Nordic ancestry and American for there immediate foster home. Both standard and miniature sizes have been bred since the 20th century. The Toy sized American Eskimo has evolved and fanciers are trying to get this miniaturized variety accepted in the UKC show ring. All 3 sizes are judged by the identical standard of perfection. He is noted for being sturdy, hardy and long lived. They will bark if something is wrong or unusual. They are affectionate and willing to please, make good watchdogs. Because of there northern heritage they can be a bit stubborn and willful but cheerfully submit's to the owners wishes if taught from the beginning, firmly and consistently. They are very intelligent and do well in obedience. The coat is true with all spitz dogs, described as self cleaning with the dirt or mud shaking off when dry. They have a little doggy odor and even though white, stay "spic and span" clean. Routine brushing is required especially in the spring when the undercoat is being shed. Eskies love the outside and will happily curl up in the snowbank with there tail over there face, rarely using there doghouse. The Eskie are unknown elsewhere, probably due to the fact many countries have developed their own type of white spitz.

Bull Mastiff

The Bull Mastiff weighs approx. 110-130 lbs. and is 25-27 inches in height. He has a smooth, short coat and comes in several colors, like red, fawn, brindle, often with the black mask. Country of origin is Great Britain, he was created in the late 1800's by crossing the English Mastiff with the Bulldog. This resulted in a more agile, quiet tracker, but with the power to cover short distances quickly. The Bull Mastiff, originally called "Gamekeeper's Night Dogs" were set against poachers. Since poaching carried the death penalty in England, those choosing the profession were prepared to murder the gamekeeper(s) pursuing them. This called for a tough fearless, absolutely silent canine assistant. During the 20th century the need for gamekeepers and there dogs waned. Contests were held to see if a man could outwit the animal. Volunteer's were given a head start in the woods or moors and after a few minutes the muzzled pursuer was slipped off lead. Upon catching his quarry, the dog knocked down the poacher and kept his captive on the ground until the handler arrived. As far as records showed, the dogs always won. The Bull Mastiff got recognition in Great Britain in 1925 and AKC followed suit in 1933. The original dark brindles so desirable for night work in it's original profession gave way to fawns. British Fanciers prefer a dog that appears to have half-mastiff, half-bulldog influence from the 19th century crosses, while Americans seem to desire a 60/40 ratio, with the mastiff dominating. The Bull Mastiff found himself in the Hollywood spot light with both Douglas Fairbanks, and producer Harry M. Warner, admires of the breed. Today Bull Mastiffs are calm, alert pets, protective of children, other pets, property, and require a firm loving owner. He is often clumsy as a young dog and demonstrates normal puppy naughtiness, which needs to be "nipped in the bud" before the full size and strength are reached. With proper training and socialization, they make wonderful companions.

Bulldog

The Bulldog country of origin is Great Britain. He is approx. 12-14 inches in height and weighs 40-55 lbs.. He comes in several colors and his coat is short and smooth. He is also known as the English Bulldog. The Bulldog, classified by cynologists in the 1630's was earlier known as bandogge or butchers dogge. Most likely related to mastiff's through the Alaunt, which was described in master of Game by Edward, second Duke of York, circa 1406: "... Alauntes are treacherous and evil... it is the best hound to hold and to nyme(seize) all manner of beasts and hold them fast. During the heinous day of bull baiting, dogs caught bulls by the ear. Bulldog's more agile than other fighters went for the nose and were less likely to be hooked by a horn. The higher legged "bulldogge" of yesterday could harass the bull into lowering it's head, so he could grab a piece of anatomy, either ear or nose. Rules were the dog had to throw and pin the beast or pull the bull backward around the ring. Other airmails like badger's, lions, monkeys, bears, were considered worthy to meet the Bulldog in combat. Pierce Egan recites, the sight brought forth patriotic utterances, as; "... What creature that, so fierce and bold, that springs and scorns to leave his hold? ... It is the Bulldog, matchless, brave, like Britons on the Swelling Wave. With the demise of the grisly sport the old-fashioned Bulldog then waded through the bloodbath of dog-fight pits. This encouraged crosses with various terriers to increase the speed, which resulted in the creation of other well known modern breeds. Today's Bulldog is not the same as the one in the 1600's. Once bull baiting was banned in 1835, the original dog evolved into the shorter faced, squattier version we know today, while retaining it's powerful undershot jaw. Bulldogs entered the show ring in the 1860's, the bloodthirsty personality of it's early years has mellowed into it's even demeanor of modern times while maintaining it's threatening appearance. This has earned it the description of "Beautiful in it's Ugliness". The Bulldog, popular mascots demonstrating the toughness of the team and have become a symbol of tenacity throughout the world. The breed has widespread shoulders and a distinctive, rolling gait, makes it recognizable anywhere. Care must be taken during hot weather, since the brachycephalic characteristic's of the nose and throat tend to restrict air flow. Bulldogs temperament is loving, quiet, gentle, and docile. Their favorite activities are following their masters around the house and taking long naps at their feet.

Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer originated in Germany and gets his name Schnauze which is German for muzzle. He has a wiry rough coat, where the coat came from is a matter of controversy with claims being made from black poodles, gray wolfspitz, dog of bolognese, shepherd dogs or possibly all these breeds were used. Whatever the source the Schnauzer has been recognized for many centuries. He comes in several colors, salt and pepper, black, or black and tan. Miniature in height are approx. 12-14 inches and weight about 13-15 lbs.. Standard Schanuzer's weight approx. 33lbs. and are about 18-19 and a half inches in height. The Standard Schnauzer was an all round good farm dog and filled many needs, ratter, drovers dog, stock tender, guardian in the home and stables, pulled carts loaded with produce to market and watched the children in his spare time, giving him the nickname " Kinderwachter". Originally wires and smooths sometimes occurred in the same litter and the "pincher" and "schnauzer" were not considered separate breeds. The first breed standard was published in 1880, and within 10 yrs the Pinscher-Schnauzer Club of Germany had separated the 2 coat varieties, the winner of the first classes for the breed in 1879 was named "Schnauzer" Possibly this was the source for the breeds name. Standard Schnauzer, the earliest of the 3 varieties He was first classified as a terrier, and competes in the working group. He is a fine obedience worker and a courageous companion. The Miniature version was created either from the Standard Schnauzer or Min-Pin crosses with Affenpinchers or perhaps both. He arrived in the States around the same time as his larger brother and has his debuted in the show ring in 1899. He is a well admired and loved dog, world wide. He is a delightful, charming companion and makes a sparkling obedience competitor. Rough Collie

The Rough Collie, also known as the Scotch Collie weighs about 50-75 pounds and is about 22-25 inches in height. He comes several colors, sable & white, tricolour, blue merle, and white. The long coats have a dense undercoat, and he originates in Great Britain. The Rough Collie is believed to be a descendant of dogs accompanying Roman invaders of 500 BC interbred with native scottish dogs. In 1860, Queen Victoria was visiting Scotland and saw the working collie and brought several back to England, with the royal stamp of approval he skyrocketed to instant fame. Breeders emphasized breeding the elongated, narrow, chiseled head and the rough coat, which is the look we know today. The Collie soon became " the dog of the moment" which accelerated with the Lad stories by Albert Payson Terhune and the Lassie films and television series. Many Collies were seen on farms during there peak but, have stabilized to the moderate universal appeal it knows today. He has a sweet expression and tipped ears are considered the stamp of the breed when showing. However, his ears can stand erect, and his coat requires regular brushing to maintain it's striking good looks. The Rough Collie is a superb children's loyal companion, always willing to give and accept adoration and to play when human playmates are more fickle. He is gentle, docile, with his family and equally a good choice for adults. The first recipient (in 1954) of the Dog Hero award, honored by the Quaker Oats Company Ken-L Ration division, was a Collie and the breed has continued to garner it's share of Dog Hero's since that first year. Collies are so adoring of their families that they will endure incredible hardships to be with them. One, named "Bobbie" journeyed 2,000 miles to find his family after being lost on a family vacation trip!

Shetland Sheepdog

The Shetland Sheepdog, also nicknamed the Sheltie or miniature Collie, originated in Great Britain from the Shetland Islands. During the 1700's fishing boats bringing king charles spaniels, "Yakki" dogs from Greenland and spitz-type herding dogs from Scandinavian countries were allowed to go onshore and often left little remembrances. The Sheltie is related to other collies directly or by ancestors. These dogs proved to be alert, eager working dogs, for the toon or town (or from tun, norwegian for farm) and were called Tonnie dogs. The Shetland Islands are bare and rugged with in hospital territory for raising stock, and it's natives were rugged too and developed animals, like miniature cattle, dwarf sheep, tiny shetland ponies which were herded by small sheep dogs. The small farms known as crofts and the crofters thought highly of there gentle herding dogs. There easy going manner made them gentle with stock. Early literature refers to the dogs as "nondescript" Shetlander named Loggie, standardized type for the show ring and the breed was entered in Crufts in 1906, were shown with the collies as miniature During WWI a fancier introduced a collie into the surviving lines and, created the type know at this time. The Sheltie standard in height and marking requirements, due to having the Rough Collie cross recently in the lines some specimens may be larger then desired but still make wonderful companions. He is 13-16 inches in height from foot to shoulder, comes in several colors, like sable and white, tri, etc. These "apartment size" collies (Shelties) are highly intelligent, willing to please, healthy, docile and great with children, as with the other collies, regular grooming schedule keeps their plush coats looking attractive.
