Weimaraner

The Weimaraner originated Germany in the 1600's, he has beautiful amber, gray, or blue eyes and his shimmering steel gray coat colour gives him a regal presence. He has large stiff ears, weighs approx. 70-85 pounds, is 23-28 inches in height from foot to shoulder, has a fine short coat but does come in a longhaired variety which is well know in Europe. In his ancestry of the Weimaraner, you'll find Bracks and Schweisshunds of Germany, and pointers a heavier variety at the time helped develop the short hair. The breed was closer to a hound type in the 1600's was used for tracking and hunting large game, but as large game started diminishing, he was crossed again with "Huenerhunden" to give him bird dog characteristics as wing shooting came in. Weimaraners are fine companions, versatile hunting, tracking dogs, can be trained in Schutzhund protection work, as they are easy to obedience train and he is at home in towns or rural area's.

Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is approx. 60-75lbs. in weight and is about 21-24 inches in height. He has a dense, water repellent, lying flat to the body, flat or wavy with some fringes but not silky, good undercoat. He comes in several shades of lustrous golden. His country of origin is Great Britain, and he is the product from the latter half of the 19th century, when so many gun dogs were formed. Sir Dudly Majoribanks (Lord Tweedmuth) kept records from his own stud books, which give a good basis of origins. The yellow recessives had always been present in the Retrievers from Newfoundland and Labrador, even though in the 1850's the fashion in England was for black "Wavy-Coats" also known as Flat-Coated Retrievers and labradors. Yellow became the prominence and later in yellow labs, chessie and goldens. Majoribanks, liked the colour and acquired a dog of that colour and named it "Nous" from Flat-Coated Breeding. Nous was crossed with Tweed Water Spaniels; now extinct english retrieving dog, which had a curly-coat and were light liver in colour. Other crossings of structure line breeding were recorded over a period of 20 years, they included Labradors, red setters, other wavy-coats and possibly Bloodhounds. This is the basic Golden's inheritance, goldens were registered and shown as Golden Flat-Coats until 1913, when they were listed as yellow or golden Retrievers, but it wasn't till 1920 that he received his name Golden Retriever. Although Majoribanks mentions nothing of the Russian Sheepdog being crossed with the goldens, other kennels could have introduced the crosses into the bloodlines. Controversy with Russian sheepdogs being opposed to the abilities of a gun dog it is unlikely that any knowledgeable dog breeder would have entertained the idea, the legend still persists. Support to the legend, the Golden first exhibited under the name of Russian Retriever or Russian Retriever and tracker; and so the story lives on. The Golden Retriever, whatever his ancestry he is a versatile dog being used for a guide dog for the blind, game hunter, and is pleasant, an easy going companion. In the USA the Golden dominates obedience competition with his flashy animation, quick reflexes, precision, trainability and intense desire to please, he does well in the show ring because of these qualities. He requires exercise to prevent overweight, his coat requires only routine brushing. He is a wonderful family pet and tolerated children mannerly in the home, yet is always ready to accompany a family member in activities. A dog nearly void of guard instincts, his fringed tail always seems to be wagging an expression of straight forward affection and trust.

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever's country of origin is Great Britain. He usually weighs 55-75lbs. and is about 21-25 inches in height. He has a moderately short dense coat. He comes in black, chocolate, yellow (from fox red to light cream). As far back as the 17th century, water dogs were used by fishermen and hunters in Canada. These were called Newfoundlands, Labrador (Greenland was once called Labrador) or St. John's Dog, depending on their geographic location. The earlier dogs were moderate in size had curled coats, carried the genetic factor to produce spotting and tended to a high tail not too much formal breeding was attempted but from these the modern Newfoundland and Lanseer, Labrador, Flat-Coat, and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers were created. Fishing Vessels, trading ships and exploratory expeditions provided continuous traffic throughout the world, with these ships came varieties of dogs which were crossed with the native dogs that were kept documented. By the 1800's, retrieving dogs were being sold in England by ships plying from the Canadian coast. With heavy taxes on dogs in Canada a great reduction in the breed in Canada occurred, more importantly the creation of the English quarantine laws essentially stopped further importations. Although the root stock came from Canada, the modern development occurred in England. Early labs came in a large variety of colors including spotting and brindle. The Flat-coat was a favorite of the 19th century and labs were not granted kennel club recognition until after the turn of the century. Labs are now in the first five breeds in both England and America, the Lab dominates in field trials in America and is well known for an upland bird flusher, companion, drug detector, obedience competitor and guide dog for the blind. One Lab named "Polly" server her blind master for a record 13 years. The Labs is well known and utilized in Australia, Canada and many other countries. The Lab is eager to please sensible, even tempered, intelligent, has talents in marking and retrieving. He has an short, easy-care coat and docile temperament make the lab a favorite family pet.

Pekingese

The Pekingese also know as Peking Plalasthund, weighs approx. 6-14lbs., comes in several colors. This canine may have been dwarfed from the hairy dogs of Tibet or like the pug, may contain some miniature versions of the brachycephalic Mastiff dogs or possible both helped create this breed. During the 8th century in China during T'ang dynasty. Ancient superstitious time, these lion like dogs were suppose to frighten evil spirits away. The Pekingese was known by several names, lion dog, Sundog for his prized golden colour or Sleeve dog when he would fit into a voluminous China sleeve. The chinese emperor Ming Ti converted to Buddhism in the first century AD and Pekingese as well as others were to be protectors of the faith. As centuries passed the popularity of these dogs among the wealthy ebbed and flowed. In the early 19th century and the next decades several dogs like the Pekingese became darlings of the Chinese Imperial court. 1000's of them were around the palaces and 4000 eunuches were housed for the main purpose of breeding, raising and caring for the Pekingese dog. Wet nursed slave girls raised the imperial puppies after their own expendable daughters were slain. No one but the nobility owned these dogs and the dogs knew nothing but pampering and gentle care. Stealing one of these dogs was punishable by death. When Peking was sacked by the British in 1860, the imperial family ordered all dogs to be slain, so they wouldn't fall into the "foreign devils". Soldiers found 4 peke's guarding the body of the emperor's aunt who had taken her own life. These dogs were taken back to England and others were soon obtained from the Peking through more normal channels. He was bred with his forelegs to be bent so he wouldn't wander far from the Imperial Precinct's. His short muzzle puts the nose directly between the eyes creating a wide "smiling" mouth and a very flat face. He should be watched on hot humid days because of his characteristic's. His large eyes are prone to injury, he has a marvelous personality, showing confidence, charm and a bit stubborn independence, they are fearless but not aggressive and there sole purpose in life is to give comfort and companionship to their owners.

Pug

The Pug originated in China where they have always favored the snub-nosed dog. He descends from the mastiff, with a boxy head, large bone, and typically thick wrinkled skin. He weighs approx. 14-18lbs. and is 10-11 inches in height from foot to shoulder. He comes in several colors, example, fawn with the black mask, black etc. He is also know as Mops, lion dog and Carlin. The Dutch East India company which traded worldwide found the Pug in China and brought it home to Holland around the 16th century. This breed became William I, Prince of Orange (1533-1584) and the Pug became a symbol of those who supported the royal family (The Orangists) just, as the Keeshond was the mascot of the Patriots or commoner's cause. Once William was victorious the pug soared in popularity. Once Catholic James II was ousted, Protenstant William II took over Englands throne and the Pug accompanied the Dutchman to the Islands and to British favor. The Pug is known as a symbol of politics and religion. The English term pug means someone tenderly loved which was in general usage in England long before the breeds arrival. The pug is sturdy enough to romp and play with children, he has a teddy-bear look with his pushed in nose and bright button eyes. He has a laid back temperament, affectionate, quiet but alert, patient, but if he attends to many tea-parties he can become grossly overweight.

Lhasa-Apso

The Lhasa Apso also known as Tibetan Apso are approx. 8-11 inches in height from foot to shoulder. He comes in several colors and originated in Tibet (China). These "holy dogs" were presented to guests as tokens of luck or as "thank you" presents, not because of there alarm dog tendencies, but because they were believed to bring peace and prosperity to their households. As nomadic "guests" traveled through the Eastern Hemisphere into Europe the appeal of their dogs spread also. The Apso type, however was the conversion of Tibet to Buddhism in the seventh century AD. Lions had been even before Buddhism, a traditional symbols of Tibetan Royalty with their famous lion throne of the Dalai Lama and the flog displaying the king of beasts, this symbol of the mighty lion was used, in slightly modified form to emphasize the power of Budda. The god was to show his complete domination of the animals by making the lion guard his temples and follow him around like a pet dog. Lhasas "lion dogs" became fixture's inside the homes of Tibetan nobility and in lamas monasteries, these little dogs were purported to be guardians which, with their wariness to strangers and sharp bark, they probably were, with Tibetan mastiff tied outside the dwelling, the little dogs were mainly the beloved companions and friends of people in an inhospitable part of the world. The Tibetans believed that Lamas (Priests) that failed to reach Nirvana come back as Lhasa Apso's, this would explain why they were treated so well by the Tibetans. Documented evidence exists that for centuries, the Dalai Lamas (the spiritual heads of Tibet) sent gifts of small lion dogs to the imperial courts of China as tokens of esteem and good fortune. The Lhasa_apso has become a favored companion dog in many modern nations with his small size combined with his surprising hardiness and ability to distinguish friend from foe have endeared him, to many owners are amazed at how well he adapts to different conditions and lifestyles, but he needs human contact to fulfill his destiny. Some can be a bit strong minded and early introduction to rules and firm, loving disciplining are recommended. Due to the brachycephalic nature of their genetic background, undershot jaws are the norm, they need clipping or regular grooming. They are well known for their longevity, dogs of 18 are not uncommon and one champion of this breed lived to be 29!!.

Shih-Tzu

The Shih Tzu weighs approx. 9-16 lbs.. His is 18-11 inches height from foot to shoulder, he comes in all colors and is also known as the Chrysanthemum Dog. It's the hair that grows upward from the short nose that gives the Shih-tzu the "Chrysanthemum" look described by the Orientals. He originates in Tibet (China). The shih-Tzu's roots are in Tibet but his perfection occurred in China. Where the chinese preferred the smaller size and very shorten face. Although some writers feel crossing to the pekingese occurred, the most dwarfed forms of the Lhasa could easily have created this charmer. The chinese called their version Shih-tzu which means lion dog, the same label that the Lhasa dogbears in Tibet. The scenario can be imagined, Tibetans sent pairs of charming smallish liondogs to the imperial court of China. The chinese also called them lion dogs (in chinese of course). Over centuries the smaller, short legged, shorter faced specimens were selected or crossed with native toy breeds and the result evolved into our modern Shih-Tzu. These dogs lived a life of luxury in the palaces of China, and were bred as loving companions. After China became a republic in 1912, occasional specimens were brought to England, Norway and later North American to begin good breeding programs prior to the Communist takeover when dogs were virtually eliminated in China. The British awarded championship status to the breed in 1949, but wasn't recognized in North America until 1960's. When allowed to be shown in American in 1969, one specimen went to best in show the first time he was shown. The breed is know for his reach, drive pushing that little body smoothly ahead like a locomotive. Shih-Tzu's have enjoyed tremendous success in show rings all over the world. In the United States Shih-Tzu's are shown in the toy group, in Canada there shown in the non-sporting group. The Shih-tzu is a fine companion dog, less suspicious of strangers that his erstwhile cousin, the Lhasa, he is athletic for his small size, very people oriented, full of confidence, self importance, requires clipping or a fair amount of grooming to look his best. Shih-tzu's consider themselves extremely dignified, yet can be charming clowns.

Japanese Chin

The Japanese Chin also known as the Japanese Spaniel, country of origin is Japan. He comes in two divisions under 7lbs. and over. The coat is profuse, long, straight and rather silky, the abundant thick feathering tends to stand out creating a mane. He comes in black and white or red ( the shades include sable, brindle, lemon or orange) with white in a broken pattern. Although similar too the other two types of spaniels, the Japanese Chin probably has an entirely different origin. He has been known in Japan for many centuries and most likely stemmed from dogs of the Asian continent. Whether the Chins were a gift to the Emperor with a Korean emissary of the 732 AD or emigrated with Buddhist monks and teachers from China, who taught Zen Buddhism, as early as 520 AD is controversial, perhaps both are true. The Japanese Chin possibly share's ancestry with the Pekingese and Pug. Only the nobility in Japan owned these dogs and they were fed rice and saki to stunt their growth some were so tiny they hung them in cages like canaries! Dogs were protected from international injury by strict laws and special housing was given to sick and aged dogs. The dog held a place of honor perhaps because the Emperor was born in the year of the dog and therefore were considered gifts of high value. When perry opened Japan to the west in 1853 he brought back some of these dogs and there appearance in Europe created a great demand and 100's of far eastern spaniels made the long journey by ship from the Orient to the west. Ten of these little dogs appeared in an 1882 New York dog show. The present Japanese Chin Club in America dates from 1912, the breeds entry into Canada was around the sametime. He is now owned by more than just the Japanese nobility, and is a beloved pet in it's homeland and other countries. The Chin with his beautiful plume tail which curls over his back is a charming, sensitive companion, adapting well to almost any indoor lifestyle. He is clean and intelligent.

Scottish Terrier

The Scottish Terrier, also nicknamed the Scottie, weighs approx. 15-20 lbs. and is 10-11 inches in height and originated in Great Britain. He comes in several coat colors, Black, Brindle, wheaton, gray's and grizzle. The Scottie just seemed to appear in 1859, no mention of the breed was recorded and, that year Scottish Terriers were exhibited as a pure breed. For a spell they were dubbed the Aberdeen, due to the central locus of the breed in the area. Scottish Terrier's and West Highland White Terrier's are closely related, ancestors of both centralized in the Blackmount region of Perthshire and the Moor of Rannoch. Hunters and Shepherds of the era were more interested in the working ability then purity, certain families had a pride in developing and retaining their own pure-strain and this is where various types blossomed into specific breeds. In 1881, a standard was drawn and a club was organized shortly after. The Scottie made it to Canada one year later, where he is now firmly rooted. The first Scottie registered in the USA was Canadian bred, after the breeds first introduction it became a common sight. He has a true terrier temperament, alert, making him a good watchdog, quick and feisty, good for varmint control. He requires firmness, discipline which will bring out his great character and loyalty to shine. The prominent eyebrows and mustaches draw attention to the elongated head and give him a scowling appearance. However clipping softens terrier coats and lightens colors, so if they decide to show their companion, a lengthy process of coat repair is involved. The Scottish Terrier is a frequent winner in the shows throughout the world.

Cane Corso

The Cane Corso (Cane di Macellaio) is a re-creation of an old Italian herding breed. This Mastiff was bred in Sicily but wasn't a habitat of Italian mainland. Often used by butchers and as a driver dog to protect transport of goods. This mastiff dates back to the 1600's. A very versatile breed as it would herd, hunt large game, guard and protect and may have participated in dog fighting. It is a typical mastiff but without a lot of loose skin. The advantage of this is that the lips don't hang as much as the other mastiff-type dogs, and therefore drools much less. The Cane Corso being one of the smaller mastiffs is much more swifter on it's feet, this breed is suspicious of strangers and can be aggressive with reason. Highly intelligent and very trainable this breed must be socialized young and needs experienced handling. However, when fully trained the Corso makes an amendable companion. The Cane Corso is thought to be the only coursing mastiff breed left in the world.
